QR CODE says: Drink. Drive. Go To Jail.

Creative QR Code Usage

Last month, during a lunch with my hubby at Jorg’s Cafe Vienna, I came across this coaster that featured a QR code. It got my attention because I have been in the barcoding industry in the last 2 years. I have read various articles about the (mis)usage of these 2D barcodes.

When it is scanned with a mobile phone, it will take you Choose Your Ride (TexasDWI.org). It is a mobile site which gives multiple transportation options in a simple, clickable format. The campaign targets males 18 to 34 which is tech savvy.

Creative Qr Code Usage

TxDOT used the same QR code strategy to combat drunken driving in many occassions. They estimated that the Choose Your Ride site received about 1,400 hits from the two weeks before the Super Bowl on Feb. 6 to one week after the game.

When you visit TxDot site, you will also see a link to Faces Of Drunk Driving. It features Jacqueline Saburido.

I can not will not forget the first time I saw Jacqui on tv. It is a sad story that needs to be told over and over. It is a story about how a drunk driver changed her life completely.

At a press conference in 2001, Jacqui said,

“Even if it means sitting here in front of a camera with no ears, no nose, no eyebrows, no hair, I’ll do this a thousand times if it will help someone make a wise decision.”
